It’s rare that a designer gets carte blanche to design a wedding. I was approached by a mutual acquaintance who told me Kierst and Davey were planning a small ceremony in a field on the farm of Davey’s best friend. I had been looking for an opportunity to create something intimate in just such a setting. I could have just done a styled shoot, but I really wanted it be an event built around a couple with all the emotion and soul that accompanies an actual wedding. Fortunately, I knew both the couple and the owner of the farm. In fact, I had done a beautiful ceremony for the owner’s mother on the farm just a few weeks prior. After a meeting with Kierst, I assembled a wedding dream team.
The ceremony was for seven guests at a single table in a field. The groom, a professional chef, would prepare the meal. I immediately hit all of my favorite antique shops, piecing together an eclectic but gorgeous collection of vintage pieces to dress the table. My favorite pieces, were the “Montana, Land of Shining Mountains” plate and the vintage ceramic log vase. I rounded it out with some fantastic glassware in various styles and sizes. We rented a rustic farm table from Montana Party Rental’s wonderful collection and completed it with mismatched vintage chairs from my own collection. Since Davey was preparing the meal, we did not have to focus on the food, but I did want a cake, and I wanted it to be spectacular!
I did not have to look far. I had noticed a single layer cake Jasmine from Whipped had done using thinly sliced candied rhubarb to create a naturally beautiful effect, so I knew that as a wedding cake, it would be stunning! Needless to say, it was amazing!
We planned gently sweeping pathways to be mowed into the field leading to the ceremony site and the outdoor dining area. The couple exchanged vows under a chuppah dripping with flowers. Davey’s best friend—and owner of the farm—officiated. Following the ceremony, the bride and groom shared the amazing farm to table dinner with their closest friends under the carnival lights and the Montana summer sky. The crowning touch came with their first dance on the dance floor we had improvised from an old barn door purchased by a friend just for that purpose.
It was such an amazing experience to be able to create something so beautiful and personal for this couple. There are few things as rewarding as seeing the joy in a bride’s eyes when she first sees her wedding environment. It was a gorgeous evening for a wonderful couple—filled with the emotion and soul that only a real wedding can bring to the table. I was honored to be a part of it.
